Can AI vastly increase the volume of global data processing and consequent energy demands
It is sometimes argued that a move towards a world where we place value on digital products and services; will reduce our reliance on physical resources. And, therefore, we can have continued economic growth without increasing demand for physical resources. But this forgets the Laws of Thermodynamics that tells us that energy is required to maintain ANY ordered system (physical or digital).
AI has potential to greatly increase the size of these digital systems, and energy demands with it.
